My Spin on the Pin {2.03.12}

I'm the type of Mom who LOVES to show off pictures of my kids. The problem? I keep forgetting to put their pictures in my purse. I pinned this mini book with the intent of filling it with pictures of my little darlings, and keeping it in my purse to have ready to pull out in an instant!

Here's My Spin on the Pin...

There are a total of 12 pages, the perfect amount for pictures of my 5 kids, 2 dogs, and I'll even add a few of my cute husband in there!

I haven't quite gotten around to filling it up with pictures just yet, but I'm working on it!

This Mini Fold Book would be a great gift! I could see it as a Valentine's Day gift for that special someone, or as a Mother's Day/Father's Day gift. There are lots of possibilities!!

Snowman Clips

A few weeks ago, I shared these snowman clips. I spotted one of my daughter's friends wearing a different kind, and decided to try and duplicate it. Here's what I came up with...

I made them just like my penguin clips, but left off the arms and googly eyes, and added a hat. I thought about adding googly eyes and an orange nose, but thought they looked fine without them. These ones are a lot simpler to make than the others, and just as cute if you ask me!

My family made a goal for the new year to be more CONSISTENT in our family scripture study. We seem to do better when we have something to mark off each day, so when I saw this calendar, I pinned it immediately!

Here's My Spin on the Pin...

I ended up printing it off on white cardstock (the front side only), and put it in a frame that I had on hand, minus the glass. As you can see, we're not perfect YET (we've missed a few days here and there), but we are doing much better at remembering to study our scriptures!

Penguin Hair Clips

My oldest daughter and I made a bunch of flower bows (like these) for the girls' friends for Christmas. As we were busy making them, I was telling her that I needed to make some snowman clips too. A lightbulb went off in her head, and she said, "Why don't you make some penguin clips?".

So this is what I came up with.

The penguins were made using THIS TUTORIAL as a guide. I did end up cutting the ribbon for the body at different lengths than what the tutorial calls for....

White ribbon: cut at 3"
Black ribbon: cut at 4" & 5"

My daughters LOVE their little penguin clips, and all of their friends have requested some too!! Guess I'd better get busy making more!

So last week I asked for some input from you guys about the future of 'Sew Cute Tuesday'. I was thinking about maybe opening it up to all types of crafts rather than just sewing projects. Well, thanks to all of you who took the time to comment, I have made up my mind. 'Sew Cute Tuesday' will remain a SEWING PROJECTS ONLY linky party! When it comes down to it, the whole reason why I started it in the first place was to get inspiration for sewing projects. My Spin On The Pin

Pinterest is my newest addiction...I spend way too much time searching for and pinning projects. To justify the time that I spend there, I decided to actually MAKE some of the stuff that I've pinned.

I'm happy to introduce what I'm calling 'My Spin on the Pin'. Every Friday, I'll be posting projects that I've pinned, then tried. Let's get started, shall we?

For my first project, I decided to go with food. Cookies to be exact.

These Peanut Butter Chocolate Chip Cookies were calling my name.

And they were oh, so good! If you're a fan of peanut butter and chocolate together, you will LOVE these cookies!!

Happy 2012!! I've been thinking for a few weeks about making some changes to my weekly 'Sew Cute Tuesday' linky party, but wanted to get some input first. How would you feel about me opening up the linky party to include all types of crafts? It seems that each week, more and more non-sewing projects are linked up, and it's hard for me to find the time to delete them all. I've even considered having 2 separate places to link up...one for sewing projects only, and the other one for everything else. Please give me your honest opinion so I can decide which direction to go. If you like 'Sew Cute Tuesday' just how it is, please say so. Birthday Cards {my dad & mom's christmas gift}

Now that my Dad and Mom FINALLY got their Christmas package, I can share these cards with you. I sent it off on December 14th, thinking it would get there in time for Christmas...WRONG!! They didn't get it until the 27th. Atleast I tried!!

Okay...back to the cards. For the last few years, part of my Christmas gift to my parents has been homemade birthday cards (HERE is a look at their 2010 cards, and the 2011 cards looked like THIS).

This year I decided to go with pennant banners, and here's what I came up with:

Triangle pennant banners for the BOYS...

And scalloped circle banners for the GIRLS...

I used my sewing machine to stitch along the banners and around the edge of the cards, and LOVE how they turned out! The box that I used came from the Beautiful Wings Tutorial from Paper Crafter's Library (you can receive the tutorial for FREE if you 'like' Paper Crafter's Library's Facebook Page), and the 'Happy Birthday' stamp is from the Paper Smooches Sentiment Sampler set.

Now I need to figure out what I'm going to make for MY birthday cards for 2012!! Hopefully inspiration will strike soon...

Hot Cocoa Cups in a Cute Little Carrier

There's nothing better than a hot cup of cocoa during the winter...especially when it's freezing cold outside!! I needed a quick gift idea for my kids' teachers, and when I saw THIS TUTORIAL from The Little Blue Room, my search was over!!

I filled each cup with 2 packets of hot cocoa, and some Candy Cane Hershey's Kisses {my favorite!}

I had to make up my own pattern for part of the carrier since I don't own a scallop envelope die cut. Here's what I did:

1. Cut two pieces of cardstock to 4.5" x 6".
2. Score at 1/2" & 4"
3. Turn cardstock and score at 1 1/4" & 4 1/2"
4. Fold along score lines, trim corners off, and adhere to carrier as the tutorial directs.

I loved these so much, that I ended up making enough to give to some of my friends, and some ladies that I visit each month as well. Hopefully I'll be able to get them delivered tonight!

{Day 12: Duct Tape Flower Pens}

One of the big trends lately is Duct Tape items. My oldest daughter has an obsession with Duct Tape, and loves making stuff with it. One of her favorite things to make is these cute Duct Tape Flower Pens. A.dorable!

She made so many that they were literally all over the house. So we came up with the idea of covering a soup can with Duct Tape to use as the 'vase'. Pretty darn cute if you ask me!

If you've got a scrapbooker on your list, this would make a GREAT gift!

When the box opens, it becomes a fun little scrapbook. It would be a perfect place to display pictures from Christmas, or any other occasion, really. The theme possibilities are endless.

{Day 7: Christmas Treat Book}

When I was a kid, one of the gifts I looked forward to every Christmas was a Lifesaver Storybook. My brothers, sisters, and I got one every year. It's a tradition I've tried to carry on with my own kids.

This year, they'll be getting one that's homemade!

I took the outer wrapper off of the lifesavers and recovered them with cute scrapbook paper.

The pattern/tutorial for this box came from the 12 Weeks of Christmas Newsletter at Paper Crafter's Library. If you'd like one of your own, all you have to do is sign up for the free newsletter on their sidebar.

Thank you for the kind birthday wishes last week! It was a great day, but would have been much better if my sweet husband was home to share it with me. This summer, we had an abundance of zucchini in our garden. As I was searching for ways to use it up, I came across a recipe for zucchini jam. Sounds gross, but it's actually REALLY good! I ended up making quite a few jars, thinking they would be perfect as Christmas gifts for our neighbors.

I absolutely LOVE this little box!!

Of course, it could be used for other things besides jam...think homemade cookies and treats!

Welcome to the 2011 edition of Creative Itch's 12 Days of Christmas!!

I'm excited to share with you some fun ideas I've found around the web...hopefully you'll find a few gift ideas for family and friends along the way!

Let's get started, shall we?!

{Day 1: Paper Bag Perpetual Birthday Calendar}

Instead of making my calendar from 9"x6" vertical envelopes, I used brown paper bags. Here's a view of one of the inside pages:

What I love about this calendar is the organization factor! Fill out the birthdays for each month, place cards in the envelopes, and you'll be all ready for birthdays for the year!

A tutorial for this project can be found HERE from Nannygoat.

**Notes**
Since I didn't use envelopes, I had to create my own flaps. Here's the measurements:
*Cut cardstock to 5 1/8" x 3 1/2". Score at 1 5/8". Round the corners of the larger half of the cardstock, and tape/glue onto the inside of the paper bag.

Last Minute {Halloween Treats}

Waiting until the last minute is something I'm pretty good at.... I seem to do it a lot lately! But I wouldn't have found these cute printables if I hadn't procrastinated.

One of my favorite things to do is to make handmade cards. I love it. Unfortunately, I don't make them as much as I'd like to. I've always thought it would be fun to participate in a card exchange, but haven't ever gotten around to it.

A few weeks ago, Amy from The Happy Scraps, posted about hosting a card exchange. I jumped at the chance to sign up! Here's the card I made for the exchange: (it was inspired by this card)

There were 14 people that signed up for this exchange, so I made one for each person and and sent them off. I should be getting my package of cards in the mail any day now. I.can't.wait!!

Another Birthday Card

I'm still on the hunt for some cute cards to make for my parents as part of their Christmas gift. What do you think of these?

I love the look of these cards, but I don't thing they would work for boys. Maybe it's just me, but I don't think boys would appreciate getting a birthday card with a flower on it. I'll have to see if the flower can be switched for something more 'masculine'!

**Edited to add: I finally got around to creating a Facebook page for Creative Itch. I've been trying to figure out how to add a 'Like Button' on my blog, and just don't get it. If anyone could explain it to me in kindergarten terms, that would be fantastic!

It's been one of those weeks where I've been forgetting everything. 'Sew Cute Tuesday' was one of those things I kept forgetting about. Guess I need to start writing down my 'To Do Lists' again! When I have those, I stay on track.

Halloween Treat Box

I always try to have a fun treat for my kids' teachers and bus drivers for the different holidays. For Halloween this year, they'll be getting these...

The boxes are easy to make, and more importantly, they come together quickly. And the cute factor is always a good thing too!

Paper Pieced Candle Birthday Card

Every year for Christmas, part of my gift to my parents is birthday cards. I make enough for them to give to all of their kids, in-laws, grandkids, and throw in a few extra in case they need them for friends. I've been on the hunt for cute cards that would be easy to mass produce, and here's one of the options I'm considering for this year.

{Spooky} Banner

Okay, here's the Halloween banner I made last year...and forgot about!

You can probably tell how these were made, but here's a run-down on it anyways.

*trace around a CD onto cereal boxes, and cut out the circles
*mod podge scrapbook paper onto circles
*cut out the letters for SPOOKY using the Cricut, mod podge them on
*punch a hole on each side of circles, and tie on some orange ribbon

Bats & Pumpkins {Halloween Banner}

Funny story. I decided a few weeks ago that I wanted to have some Halloween decorations ready to go on October 1st. I needed a banner, and got to work making a special one to hang up on our wall. It turned out even better than I had envisioned (love it when that happens!).

Bats and pumpkins were on my mind, so I decided to go with that theme for my banner. Here's how it turned out.

I used cereal boxes for the bats and pumpkins, spray painted them, added glitter, then hung them up on some twine. You can't tell from these pictures, but the bats and pumpkins are super sparkly!!

I tried to get a few shots in the sun so you could see the pretty sparkles...

Now for the funny part of this story...

I hung my banner up on October 1st, then got the rest of my decorations out of storage. Turns out I had forgotten about a banner that I made for Halloween last year!! Oops!! Hate it when that happens!! Oh well....you can never have too many banners hanging up, right?

I never got around to sharing my banner from last year on here (that's probably why I forgot about it!). I'll work on getting pictures of it so I can get it posted.

Pull-Tab Treat Can Tutorial

Last week I had the opportunity to guest post at Meremade. In case you missed it, here's the tutorial I shared...

Finding ways to recycle 'trash' has become a hobby of mine. I love taking something that would otherwise be thrown away, and turning it into something useful and {cute}! Today I'm going to show you how to make a Pull-Tab Treat Can...

These Pull-Tab Treat Cans would make a fun addition to your kids' lunch boxes, or even a great gift for a teacher or friend!

Let's get started, shall we?! Here's what you'll need:

*1- Fruit Can with a pull tab on top (I used an 8.75 oz. can of peaches)
*1- Safety Can Opener
*1- 3.75"x8.75" piece of scrapbook paper
*ribbon & other embellishments
*hot glue gun
*scrapbook adhesive
*candy

First, using your safety can opener, open your can from the BOTTOM. Empty the fruit out of the can and wash both the can and the bottom lid well. Dry thoroughly.

Adhere the 3.75"x8.75" piece of scrapbook paper around the can, and decorate as desired.

Fill the can with candy, leaving a 1/4" to 1/2" head space.

Put some hot glue on the edge of the bottom lid and quickly place back on the can.

And there you have it...easy peasy!!

You can get really creative and use other items besides candy to go inside the cans as well. How about putting a few bracelets and maybe some earrings inside? Or what about some small toys? The sky's the limit!!

{Preschool Palace}

If you're looking for an AWESOME resource for all things preschool, you really must check out Preschool Palace!

I came across this site last year when I was looking for preschool ideas for my 2 youngest kids, and was immediately hooked! What I love about it is that:

#1. All of the work is done for you, and

#2. It's FREE!

Before I found Preschool Palace, I was spending hours each day searching for worksheets, activities, and craft ideas to go with certain themes. It became overwhelming! Now all I have to do is print off the curriculum, gather my supplies, and enjoy 'preschool time' with my kids.

This year I'm using the Cycle 2 Curriculum for my 4-year-old son. Our first day of preschool starts on September 1st...I think I may be more excited about it than he is!!

We have an abundance of zucchini from our garden, and the kids are tired of zucchini bread and muffins. I needed another way to use it up, and came across THIS RECIPE from Allrecipes.

The zucchini is boiled with a few other ingredients until it's clear, then you add flavored gelatin mix to it. Take my word for it...this jam is DELICIOUS!!

My kids and husband have already used up 2 jars of the strawberry jam (I also made some using apricot gelatin, but we haven't tried that kind yet). They love it best on homemade bread with butter.

I'm already planning on using some of these as neighbor gifts for Christmas. The way our garden is producing zucchini, I'm sure I'll be making a LOT more jam!

Back to School Teacher Backpacks

My kids were excited to meet their new teachers and see their classrooms during 'Back to School Night'. We couldn't show up empty handed, so each teacher got one of these cute backpacks filled with treats.

The backpacks were filled with a Post-It Note holder and some candy.

My kids and I finally got to meet my newest nephew over the weekend...he is absolutely adorable!! We couldn't get enough of him! On the way home, the kids were talking about how cute he is, and how much they loved holding him. We wish we lived closer so we could love on him all the time!

Pinwheel Backpack

One of my favorite blogs to ~~stalk~~ visit is Inking Idaho. Becky always has THE CUTEST ideas for cards and paper crafting! She has tutorials for sale on her side bar, and the newest one offered is a Birthday Backpack Tutorial. I just HAD to have it!!

Pinwheel Card {Boy Version}

So a few weeks ago I shared some pinwheel cards with you, and mentioned that I'd made some 'boyish' ones too. I finally got around to taking a picture....what do ya think?

I used boy scrapbook paper for the pinwheels, and a star punch for the center. When asked my husband what he thought, his response was this: "Boys don't really care about the card." Well...that's good to know!! I always worry that the cards I make for boys turn out too 'girly', but with his sound advice, I'll quit stressing about it!

Pinwheel Cards

I found some cute stamps at Michael's for a great deal (.49 cents a piece!), so I grabbed two of them and made some pinwheel cards to try them out on.

This is the first one I made...

After the first card was done, I decided the pinwheels needed some ink around the edges.

Here's the two, side by side. I think I like the look of the inked pinwheels better.

Don't you love the pinwheels? I ended up making a bunch of these in both 'girl' and 'boy' colors, but left the stamped sentiments off. That way they'll be ready to go for any occasion...all I'll have to do is hurry and stamp something on the front!

I haven't taken pictures of the 'boy' version yet. I'll try to get that done and post them so you can see the difference!

FYI: HERE is a great tutorial for making pinwheels. Changes I made:
**used 1.5" x 1.5" squares of double sided paper
**punched out flowers to use in the center of pinwheels
**used brads to hold them together

Sewing Camp Project #3: {Fabric Bracelets}

Only 2 of my girls wanted to make our 'Sewing Camp' project #3. I think the other girls' excitement about sewing has died down a bit, but I'm not giving up on them!!

We used THIS TUTORIAL from Women Who Do It All for our bracelets. They turned out DARLING!

I'm hoping to fit in a few more projects before school starts, but things seem to get busier and busier! Maybe we can make some more of these to stash away for birthday gifts/Christmas gifts! It's never too early to start thinking about Christmas!!

A Birthday Treat

My neighbor had a birthday recently, and I wanted to give her a fun gift. She loves chocolate almost as much as I do {wink}, so I finally settled on making her this:

A standard size Hershey's bar fits perfectly inside...YUM!

I used THIS TUTORIAL as a guide for the box, but changed the dimensions to these:

**Cut a piece of cardstock to 6.5" x 6.5".
**Score at 1/2" and 6" on one side, then turn cardstock and score at 1", 1.5", 4", and 4.5".
**Cut the box and put together as laid out in the tutorial I linked to above.

These boxes go together really quick, and dress up chocolate in a big way!

Patriotic Doily Banner {My Version}

There are so many great ideas for 4th of July decor in blogland, but the minute I saw THIS BANNER from The Scrap Shoppe, I just HAD to have one! I don't own a Silhouette, so I had to figure out another way to make mine. This is what I came up with:

I feel more patriotic every time I look at it!

Want to make one for yourself? Here's what you'll need:

**White Doilies (I used 4", 6", and 8")
**Royal Blue & Red spray paint
**Mod Podge
**string, yarn, ribbon (something to string them together)

Spray paint the 8" doilies red, and the 4" doilies blue (mine needed 2 coats of spray paint). Once they're dry, cut them in half and Mod Podge the 3 layers together. Be extra gentle as you spread the mod podge on the doilies...they are delicate! When the Mod Podge is dry, string your yarn, ribbon, etc. through the holes in the doilies and hang up! Easy peasy!!

Sewing Camp Project #2 {Paper Bag Banner}

My 3rd daughter, who just turned 9 years old, was the only one of my girls that was interested in helping make our 2nd project for 'sewing camp'. We decided to make a paper bag banner to display at her (and 2 of my other kids') birthday party.

She worked hard at sewing the paper on the bags, and kept commenting that sewing in a straight line is HARD! She worried that she wasn't doing a very good job, but I assured her that the crooked lines would give our banner lots of character. I think that made her feel better! Here's our finished banner:

I had to snap a picture while my daughter was sewing. The lighting wasn't too great in our living room, but I absolutely LOVE how this picture turned out!!

This week is going to be a busy one, but I'm hoping that we'll be able to fit in enough time to make our next project for 'sewing camp'!

Sewing Camp Project #1: {Paper Bag Albums}

For my girls' first 'Sewing Camp' project, I decided to go with something easy...paper bag albums! All they needed to do was sew one straight line (my kind of project!). It was a good starting point, because they got to practice backstitching as well as sewing a straight line.

This one is my soon to be 12-year-old's. Her paper bag album is all ready for the pictures we'll be taking at the big birthday party (which is this Saturday!).

All the kids loved sitting at the sewing machine when it was their turn to sew their bags together. They can't wait for our next project!

My 'baby' is growing up! Today is his birthday....he's turning 4 years old! We've been celebrating birthdays for a few days now, and we've still got one to go! One of my daughters turned 9 years old on the 18th, and my oldest daughter will be turning 12 years old on the 24th. I'm still having a hard time believing I'm old enough to have a 12-year-old!

Soda Can Coasters

I've got bags and bags full of empty soda cans, so as soon as I saw THIS TUTORIAL from The Idea Room, I just had to give it a try!

This first set was made using energy drink cans. My husband thinks they're pretty cool!

And then I had to try some soda cans. Blogger doesn't want to load this picture the right way, but you get the idea.

These would make a perfect gift for Father's Day....or birthdays....or Christmas! I'll definitely be making more!
